A gentle nomad…

A nomad stopped at my shop today
And I asked him what he would take
He said he would like an apple
And a large slice of fresh tea-cake.

So I did give, and he receive
And we sat and chatted of life
We could have been just us two on Earth
I thought, passing the butter knife.

At last he said he had to go
With a gentle ancient cough
He left a small wooden cross behind
Donned his cap, said goodbye, and was off.

The man was just a stranger
From Adam I knew not he
But he had such a peaceful aura
And he left that cross for me.

It’s quiet in the shop these days
Of the nomad I saw no more
Be he had such a gentle way with him
That moved me to the core.

Faith…

I guess I missed you around today
My nerves were all on edge
I thought about you often
And of that infernal wedge.
But the fact is folk are dying
And I think you should do more
In fact, it seems to me sometimes
Your performance is quite poor.
What’s that I hear you say to me
What is it that I do
I guess you have a point there
Should I sit and watch like you?
You see,
I’m never sure that I believe
The things I hear of you
Such evil roams about this world
Folks don’t know what to do.
Some put their faith in you so much
But see those hopes get dashed
Where cultures and religions meet
It’s less than peaceful when they’ve clashed.
But who am I, a simple soul
I’m sure your plan is wise
Though man should suffer for his sins
It’s hard to look in sufferings’ eyes.

Not to be alone…

And so I arrive at the end of my day
Achieving so little in the time that I’ve had
But passage along my self-guided way
Meant I happened upon you, which made me so glad.
And on we carried in togetherness fond
A love so great and so true
We forged in life love’s greatest bond
Yet now here alone I do so miss you.
For how can a one live a life all alone
The sharing, the joy, and the heartache
You lean on each other like you can’t on your own
Helping each other in decisions you make.
Never did a man set his feet on God’s earth
That didn’t have a lover that increased his worth.

More good intentions

Glasses…

Is the glass half-empty, is it half-full
Or perhaps there’s no glass there at all
Every event that I ever faced
Would have still taken place as I recall.
But my part in them, I controlled myself
For our will to think freely gives us choice
We should use our will now in the moment
With wisdom we’ve earned when raising our voice.
Attack the future with vigour and might
Fend off the negative thoughts that we hold
Face up to the days ahead with courage
For fortune favours the brave and the bold.
Many are they who would bring you down low
Free will can help you decide not to go.

Good Intentions…

Though I am weakened with old aging bones
Yet still I would rise for my daily chores
And aching in joints from falls on the stones
I’m encouraged by my ‘keep going clause’.
And yet callow youth as I watch you play
My heart overflows with such ancient delights
In you I recall a memorable day
Soon to be followed by sleepless nights.
And now here you are with heart aflutter
Pure intentions kept in check by your fear
The delicate heart will sometimes stutter
Yet guides you for life if you let it steer.
I feel so renewed as I watch the dance
My heart blessed again by this new romance.

What news today…

What news today my friends, what news today…

Many more babies have been born into want
Whilst many more weren’t wanted at all
For them, a terrible, difficult life lies ahead
As they fight against ignorance and society’s sprawl.

How many trees have been felled today, how many trees did fall…

All of the gases that leech from the wounds
Where tropical rainforests stood
Slashed by the profiteer company greed
Another piece of Earth that’s shedding its blood.

How goes the war brother, how goes that war…

We watch all those thousands who flee from their land
Evicted by violence as is always the way
Yet leaders on all sides never suffer like this
For the refugee struggle is a price they don’t pay.

Do we love our fellow brethren, do we…

For if a man could truly love his brother
The world would soon somewhat alter
But it would take so very much courage
And be a task from which man can’t falter.

Amongst the mermaids…

The bright blue sea in which they swam
Was so deep, so very, very deep
They held each other in eternal love
And swore their hearts they’d keep.
Down and down and down they swam
To a depth they couldn’t believe
Yet on they pressed as they both held hands
Leaving those at the surface to grieve.
But don’t be sad they beg of you
They’re happy and will never part
They swim now amongst the mermaids
Together with their joined lovers’ heart.
That we could all find a happiness
Of such depth that we’d give up all
For true love turns hearts into heroes
Whilst without love our lives remain small.

Who are we – we are one…

The ticking of the clock marks the moments
Since the last breath you took on this Earth
The seconds tick away just like teardrops
As you’re replaced by a much-wanted birth.
And on yet it moves, the cycle of life
Never-ending since the dawning of time
Yet what are we worth who slaughter so
Our such violent nature has no rhyme.

For what are we really, this so savage race
Who would trample down others without thought
Who would take to our weapons in a moment
When more peaceful solutions should be sought.
And yet – there are those with the patience of Job
Who’ve committed to peace all their days
Who would give up their life for another
We are humans with such complex ways.

So many are killing one another
It matters not the colour of the dead
For when you look at the bodies that lie slaughtered
You’ll notice the blood is all red.
And when families all gather to mourn loved ones
In the church of their faith amidst fears
The dead were all once of the one human race
And we all cry the same sad wet tears.
